Bribe the Guards

The majority of the staff here take really awesome care of me. They know what they are doing, and generally are the best of the best. I know I've griped a time or two about them, but I can tell they really do care about us. And I respect them so much for being able to work with cancer patients. Patients who often are at their most sick and most vunerable. This disease often has such horrible (and big time disgusting) side effects.

They cheer me up in the middle of the night when i wake up crying. My first night here, way back in October, a nurse named Miranda came in to see what was wrong. I was sobbing. I told her what a bad day I had and how I just wanted my mom and I wanted to go home. She sat down next to me on the bed and put her arm around my shoulders. Obviously, all I really needed that night was a hug.

So I agree that one of the greatest things I could do for them is to get them care packages with lots of goodness. And since I'm stuck here on the 11th floor and can't leave, you all will have to be my goto guys/gals.

I was thinking of fun things like desk toys or pens, little gift baskets with hoo ha kind of stuff in it. Not expensive, but fun. Also, if you can safely pack cookies or other sweet things like candy. Would be totally cool.

They have a pretty rough job to do.

Yea I'm first! My other e-mail is lisa-diane@charter.net BTW - we are one in the same.

I sent YOU a little package last week so I hope you get that soon but will get something fun in the mail for the nurses soon. It'll be fun to shop for.

Thinking of you and hoping today is a better day.

In the hospital as in the real world (hmm, let's call the hospital a microcosm, rather than implying it's not of the "real world") there are good and bad situations. And as for people, there are those who ROCK, like Miranda, and those who, for reasons of their own, fear to go outside the bounds of their job description.

I am glad to hear you talk about people like Miranda, and also (woohoo!) to hear you talk about being discharged from the hospital.

Umm, I'm pretty sure that the morphine made me find almost everything funny, but I also liked it. Glad to see that you've got such wonderful nurses. They rock!!

Posted by: Mr. Fancypants at March 7, 2006 02:58 PM

I'm glad you are being taken care of by people who understand and practice the "compassion" part of the job that's unwritten but should be there to make a good doctor or nurse (or anything in between).

I don't know about the morphine/movie experience, but I can tell you that ANY of the "Police Academy" flicks are greatly improved by a good brain numbing of one kind or another.

God, I hope I didn't just piss off a bunch of Steve Gutenberg fans!

Perfect timing for me reading this! I was heading out in a bit to pick up some things, and I know just the place to go for you, for nurses, for your family.

I included a hand-written note in the package I sent out yesterday, and will put a note in the 'new' package too. I hope you will be able to read the handwriting.

I'm so glad the nurses are so good. Here is a quick funny nurse story.

I was in labor with my first child. LABOR FOREVER. (ended up being an emergency C-section)
At one point I had a catheter in (dont know if its spelled right, and too lazy to find out), and the nurse was emptying my pee-pee into a plastic thingy. It was quite shallow. It was quite full, and as she was walking away she tripped on something. I heard 'OH SHIT'. I was worried. I didnt see her trip, so I just heard her outburst. When I heard, I looked over at her, and just saw her back. She turned around, and I saw. She was wet. ALL.OVER.HER.FRONT. She just said- Oh, its nothing; I just took a bath in your urine.

I'll never forget that.

Deb--you are a sweetheart--I'll see what I can dig up!

Here's a joke for you--I came late from Susie's blog:

How do you make your tissue (Kleenex) dance?
You put a little boogie in it!

I'm a diabetic too--rough stuff with all those candy ads all over the place, eh?!

Hugs from up here in Canada--the trees are starting to prematurely bud up here--hopefully there's no snowstorm any time soon to freeze them out!

Debutaunt,
Our prayers go out to you and your family. We applaud your mantra that, “I can do this.”

My father went through a period of chemotherapy and suffered with the agonizing mouth ulcer problems. One of his caregivers had suggested a rather simple concoction which seemed to give him much help. I remember the formula because I mixed it up for him on several occasions. It is a mouth wash (gargle solution) which consists of a mixture one third Benadryl Elixir ( generic = diphenhydramine elixir ), one third kaopectate, and one third water. All of these are over the counter items.

I was told that the benadryl elixir has a mild “local anesthetic effect” with the koapectate adhering to the ulcer surface and thus keeping the benadryl on the ulcer surface to work. He didn’t swallow much of the mixture, but would mouthwash with it multiple times a day. He said that it helped him be able to swallow more water and fluids.

I can’t promise, but he said that it helped him.
Best wishes and prayers.

I'm back! And here you are talking about being discharged!!!!! Whoooppeeee!!! Oops, maybe I should go easy on words ending in "pee" right now, eh? ;)

Alright, I'll have more bribery goods inbound to you by tomorrow. Did they like that first batch or should I try something else??

So glad you're beginning to see light at the end of this tunnel, sweetie! love,

I haven't read every single one of your entries, after being directed here by another Texan gardener/knitter... but here's a cheer and a hug and a BEST WISHES to you. I hope that Uma (and THE FORCE are with you.) I had surgery then chemo/radiation last year on my boob. The bad boob is Thelma. The other one is Louise. With curiosity and a sense of humor you can pretty much manage anything it seems to me. I hope you have everything you need to feel loved and strong.

Good Morning my Queen!

I went out last night, and the store I was going to was closed. Isnt that a damn it?

I gotta get ready for class. I'll be back.

Hope your UTI is feeling much better today.

Hope the Queen is feeling better. I am glad the
majority of the nurses/murses show you some
rachmones (compassion in Yiddish-I slipped that right in here for you.)

Today is a new day with the new cells in their new
"home". It won't be too much longer before you
are dancing to "that pimp song". And waving to your loyal subjects from your balcony.

Love,
Shoshie

Deb,

BIG BIG HUGS TO YOU!

LOVE YOU!

Hey! I thought of a stupid human trick I do... When I wiggle the fingers on my right hand, the fingers on my left hand move, too. If I concentrate, I can make them not move at the same time, but my powers of concentration are usually being used for other things.

Posted by: CircusKelli at March 8, 2006 08:20 AM

God Bless you and Miranda.

Posted by: Patrick at March 8, 2006 08:23 AM

Kelli, i'm just crackin' up at your stupid human trick!

Out of class and checkin' in. Hope your day is going better than yesterday.

Now, to study 'til the kidlets get home. OH JOY!!

Then, we get to do some shopping! I'm looking forward to that. You have brightened my day, my Queen. Thank you!

For all the "Mirandas" in the health care system.
We thank you. I know they have a very demanding,
difficult job. Working with cancer patients is
very rewarding, but it takes special kind of person.

Queen of the Universe-may today be a good day for
you.

Hi. And how awesome are you to be thinking of the nurses? Wow.

Posted by: Amy at March 8, 2006 12:29 PM

Just checking on you. I hope today is a good day. I worry about you but know you are directing all of your energy to kicking cancers ass (and you are!).
Hugs and prayers . . . .

Keep hugging your baby monkey, and we the loyal

Back to being a stalker ;-)

Thinking of you, and how you're doing. Hopefully you're getting some good rest, no itching, pulled off skin healing, and pee pee flowing!

Checking in -- a Duchess' work is never done, you know...! Incentives for the guards have been purchased, and will be mailed by tomorrow. In the meantime, you are to bask in the glory of your new healthy cells taking hold and healing you. Duchess' orders!!

Debufans,

Spoke to the Debster a bit ago. She's OK, and will post when she has a chance. Morphine doesn't mix with typing the best.

Here's a joke for your nurses. Trust me, they'll find this funny (I'm an RN and we have sick senses of humor):

911 Dispatcher: What is the nature of your emergency?

Man: I was out hunting with a friend and suddenly he just clutched his chest and fell to the ground. I think he might be dead. What do I do?

911 Dispatcher: The first thing you need to do is make sure he is dead.

Man: Ok.

Pause.

Shot rings out.

Man: Ok, now what?

Posted by: Sheryle at March 8, 2006 08:25 PM

Sheryle- that was great!!!!

Sis #1- thanks for the update. We're here, and if Deb is having a hard time mixing morphine and typing, its OK! We will figure out a way to entertain ourselves, even if cow licking is involved.

Good morning, Deb :) Right now, praying for healing, for comfort, for optimism, for you. And giving thanks for you and all those who love you and take good care of you. I hope today's a good one, and you feel surrounded by love and RACHMONES.

Posted by: Susie at March 9, 2006 07:30 AM

The Queen of the Universe is having a meeting with Prince Charles. 'Tis why she can't write
her loyal subjects. The meeting is about the UGLY
HATS his wife Camille wears. I recently saw
a picture of her and wondered, "Does she think
she is Mary Poppins"?

The Queen of the Universe needs to give this
very grave matter her full attention.

The Queen is resting I hope, telling the ROYAL
CELLS, to do the Royal March (whatever that is).

Anyhoooooooo I hope The Queen is feeling better
today. I don't know the Yiddish term for "off
with your head". When we were kids, that was
a big term amongst ourselves. Who knows why,
it sounded good :)

A gigantic hug for you Queen,
Shoshie

Posted by: Shoshie at March 9, 2006 08:12 AM

Good morning. Shoshie is crackin' me up! I hope you are laughing too!
I do hope your talk about the UGLY HATS is going well, because no one should be allowed to wear such things. It will and probably has scared little children, they probably think something is trying to eat her hair! Hair eating is scary.

Posted by: Stalker Dawn at March 9, 2006 09:01 AM

Hey! How do you get an elephant out of the theater?

You can't! It's in their blood. ;)

Posted by: CircusKelli at March 9, 2006 09:28 AM

I won't even start on Shoshie-I read and shake my
head.

Sure hope the Queen is doing better today. Remember
DEBUMA you rule the Universe. You can do this.
If I recall you bought Shoshie for 1.00. You
will rule all of us, and Shoshie can be your
personal maid.

We love you,

Deb, it sounds as if the staff there are excellent, much like the staff who worked with my mother as she underwent radiation therapy: cheerful, positive, and competent. I’m glad to hear that they are with you.

Posted by: Sometimes Saintly Nick at March 9, 2006 12:33 PM

$1.00 for a personal maid is a great deal! Can I have her when you're done with her? I'll even pay $2.00, and maybe give her a week break from her maiding duties.

I'm hope you're doing well today, and feeling stronger and less pain with each passing hour.

Love and hugs to you!!

Twins turning 6 decided they were old enough to swear. So they asked their cousin, who was MUCH older, at least 10, for some swearing advice. He gave them a few words, and they decided to try out their new vocabulary the very next day at breakfast. When Mother asked what cereal they preferred, Timmy answered, "Ah hell, I'll have Cheerios." Which landed him in the bathroom getting his mouth rinsed with soap. When Mother returned to ask Tommy what cereal, he replied, "Well, you can bet your ass it won't be Cheerios...!"

Hope you're feeling better today, my Queen.
